Jean Yarrington (Nee Exley) Remembered her roots!
We have a sad and amazing story to tell you one that bridges a gap of 46 years!
On the 13th May our secretary, Alan Jazwinski, recieved this email from Steven Yarrington, San Antonio, Texas, USA.
My name is Steven Yarrington, and my mom, Jean, passed away last night at 7:30pm. We live in San Antonio, Texas, but the reason I’m writing this is because Jean was in the Huddersfield Youth Brass Band (she grew up in Huddersfield until she was 18 where she went to London for nursing school), and her whole life she has loved music, brass bands, and her trombone. She talked frequently about how everything started for her in the Huddersfield Youth Band, and she loved the trip to Norway the band took in the 60’s (she’s the girl 2nd to the left in the red jacket in the pictures on the right!). She didn’t have enough money to buy her own instrument, so she borrowed the trombone the band had available….which is where it all got started! Her passion for music was unbelievable, and she loved Huddersfield so much.
So, with sadness, we have to announce that Jean has passed away and it is very disappointing that we are unable to reunite her with her old friends in the band. It is fantastic that she remembers her time with us and appreciated the opportunities given to her, opportunities that we now give to another generation!
However, the story doesn't end there.
In an amazing gesture of generosity, Jean's family have asked that, in lieu of flowers, her friends donate to Huddersfield Youth Brass Ensemble. Steven said, "We couldn’t think of a better way to remember Mom than by helping kids in Huddersfield grow or find their passion for music like she did."
Donations totalling £972 have now been received and, after serious consideration and consultation with Jean's family, we will continue to encourage local children to become involved in music and create a lasting tribute to Jean.
Specifically, a 'most improved player' award will be made every 6 months, to a player still in year 11 or below. We will also ensure that any young person wanting to play in our association will be provided with an instrument, free of charge, even if it means purchasing a new instrument because instruments are unavailable.
We would like to thank Jean's family and anyone who contributed to our funds, it was a fantastic gesture gratefully received!
